The office of Geology and Mineral Resources works to reduce risk from geologic hazards and encourage sustainable development through the wise use of mineral, land, water and energy resources. From detailed maps and technical reports to complex geological data and core samples, our team of experienced geoscientists provide expert assistance in all matters relating to Virginia's geological and mineral resources.
The State Energy Office works to promote sustainable energy practices, expand Virginia's clean energy inventory and ensure equitable access to renewable energy programs across the state. By working closely with community, legislative and industry stakeholders, we aim to create a reliable, sustainable and affordable energy future for all Virginians.
Virginia Energy's Coal Mine Safety and Mined Land Repurposing offices work to ensure safe and environmentally responsible coal mining operations in the state. Coal Mine Safety provides resources for worker safety, licensing, compliance and mine reclamation to keep operations safe, clean and productive. Mined Land Repurposing regulates surface mining effects, reclaims abandoned mine lands, issues permits and addresses citizen concerns related to land impacted by coal mining activities.
From construction sites to art galleries, minerals extracted in Virginia are used in industries across the world and contribute thousands of jobs and billions of dollars to our economy. Virginia Energy provides for the safe and environmentally sound production of Virginia's non-fuel minerals, administering both safety and regulatory programs for all mining operations.
Mined Land Repurposing is responsible for ensuring the reclamation of land affected by surface and underground coal mining activity. The team regulates surface effects of coal mining, reclaims abandoned mine lands, issuing permits and responds to citizen concerns.
Virginia's first commercial natural gas well was drilled near Bristol in 1931. Nearly 100 years and over 10,000 wells later, the natural gas industry continues to be an integral part of the Commonwealth's economy. Virginia Energy regulates the effects of gas and oil operations through permitting, inspections, client assistance, abandoned well reclamation, correlative rights protections and conservation awareness.
Virginia is growing, and so is our energy consumption. In the next 15 years alone, energy demand in the Commonwealth is estimated to grow by more than 85%. Thankfully, we have the resources, workforce and worldclass infrastructure needed to meet this challenge head on.
