The Advisory Committee on Landslides was created in 2021 by legislation authorizing the National Landslide Preparedness Act.

The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey's Geomagnetism Program is to monitor the Earth's magnetic field. Using ground-based observatories, the Program provides continuous records of magnetic field variations covering long timescales; disseminates magnetic data to various governmental, academic, and private institutions; and conducts research into the nature of geomagnetic variations.

The Landslide Hazards Program (LHP) is the only federal program dedicated to landslide hazard science and applications. The LHP supports the USGS mission to serve the Nation by providing reliable scientific information to minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters through improved understanding of landslide hazards and strategies for hazard mitigation. 

The mission of the USGS Volcano Hazards Program is to enhance public safety and minimize social and economic disruption from eruptions by delivering effective forecasts, warnings, and information on volcano hazards based on a scientific understanding of volcanic processes.

Scientists and technical staff within the Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program study coastal and ocean resources from shorelines and estuaries to the continental shelf and deep sea, providing expertise, tools, products, and data that address and inform a broad array of resource challenges facing our Nation.

To provide and apply relevant earthquake science information and knowledge for reducing deaths, injuries, and property damage from earthquakes through understanding of their characteristics and effects and by providing the information and knowledge needed to mitigate these losses.

The mission of the USGS in natural hazards is to develop and apply hazard science to help promote the safety, security, and economic well-being of the Nation.
