At the end of fiscal year (FY) 2023, the CDI had 2,614 members. Two new collaboration areas were also established in FY 2023.

The Community for Data Integration is a community of practice whose purpose is to advance the U.S. Geological Survey’s data integration capabilities. In fiscal year 2023, the Community for Data Integration held 10 monthly forums, facilitated 18 collaboration areas, and supported 12 projects. The activities supported the government-wide Year of Open Science, and burgeoning initiatives like the USGS Data Strategy. Through these efforts, community members were informed of new and emerging technologies and data topics that helped them accomplish their professional responsibilities.

At the end of fiscal year (FY) 2023, the CDI had 2,614 members. Members included both USGS employees and USGS contractors, as well as members from academia, non-profits, commercial companies, and other state, federal, and international organizations. The roles that members serve in their organizations include data managers, research scientists, software developers, managers, data scientists, and other practitioners. In 2023, CDI welcomed a new member to the facilitators team: Emily Chapin.

New CDI Collaboration Areas in FY23

Power Platform

A community of practice created to bring together existing and future Microsoft Power Platform users to share resources and ideas, learn from each other, receive training, and co-locate Power Platform information. Some highlights from this community of practice include presentations from Microsoft Technical Specialists, demonstrations of existing USGS Power Apps, a step-by-step demonstration of the development of a Power BI dashboard, and the organization of topic-specific collaboration areas. This community of practice held a contest in which two winners were selected to spend time with Microsoft specialists to develop a proof-of-concept for their ideas.

Usability

The Usability collaboration area is a place to build and enrich a community of user experience professionals at USGS and in the greater science community by providing a space to meet, share, and learn with one another. Topics include user-centered design, usability testing, user research, UX strategy, UX design, and content strategy. This collaboration area was led by Sophie Hou from 2019-2021, and revived by Rachel Bryan in FY23.
