Monitoring and Analysis of Water Resources with Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe
The USGS has partnered with the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe in monitoring and investigations for years to aid their management of water and natural resources. Currently, this includes a water-level gage on Mille Lacs Lake, an important walleye fishery for the Band, who have treaty-protected fishing rights. The lake is also the water source for many wild rice beds managed by the Band.
Approach
•Maintain and operate continuous lake water-level gage on Mille Lacs Lake.
•Frequently field calibrate and verify that instrumentation and equipment are recording and transmitting accurate data.
Objectives
1.Continuously monitor lake-water level.
2.Collect data per USGS protocols & post in real-time.
3.Publish all data publicly using the USGS National Water Information System (USGS NWISWeb).
