Thermal Infrared Images of Groundwater Seeps in the Upper Shawsheen River Watershed, Massachusetts

March 12, 2024

This USGS data release contains datasets and metadata associated with identifying locations of groundwater seepage to streams in the Upper Shawsheen River Watershed in Massachusetts. Data were collected in August 2023 to characterize the spatial distribution of groundwater seeps along streambanks within Elm Brook, Hartwell Brook, and the Shawsheen River.  Discharge measurements were made at 19 locations within the Upper Shawsheen River Watershed to help identify areas of groundwater influx. Thermal-infrared imaging was combined with field measurements of temperature to identify groundwater seepage to surface waters. This data release contains locations of discharge measurements, GPS locations of identified groundwater seeps, thermal-infrared and visible-light image data, and direct riverbank and stream temperature measurements.

This dataset contains 2 main files:

1) Image.zip is a zipped directory containing thermal-infrared and visible-light images collected by handheld cameras along Elm Brook, Hartwell Brook, and the Shawsheen River.

2) Groundwater_seeps.txt is a tab delimited text file containing latitude and longitude coordinates, direct temperature measurements in degrees Celsius (deg C), and forward-looking infrared (FLIR) image number of groundwater seeps throughout the Upper Shawsheen River Watershed. FLIR image number corresponds to FLIR images in Images.zip.
