Current Landsat Science Team Reflects at Final Meeting
The Winter 2023 USGS-NASA Landsat Science Team (LST) meeting was held February 7-9, 2023, at the Desert Research Institute in Reno, Nevada. This meeting concludes the five-year term of the current team.
The meeting objectives included:

Providing status reports on the Landsat 9, Landsat 8, and Landsat 7 missions

Presenting and discussing changes to Landsat Collection 2 Level-2 production, Collection 2 cloud access and use, and Landsat 9 reprocessing considerations

Discussing key science and application priorities for Landsat Collection 3

Discussing Landsat’s interoperability and harmonization with other Earth observing systems

Providing the status of the NASA/USGS Landsat Next mission
The LST heard USGS and NASA programmatic updates, as well as details about Landsat Collection 2 data and subsequent science products and future plans for Collection 3. Several members provided information on topics such as atmospheric correction, cloud detection, Landsat Multispectral Scanner System (MSS) geometry, and global analysis ready data for consideration in Collection 3.
During their tenure, the LST was instrumental in discussions about data from current Landsat missions (thermal infrared data usability, higher-level science products) as well as providing important feedback and experimental findings that were implemented into the upcoming Landsat Next mission.
While each member of the LST participated in advancing scientific knowledge through numerous publications, in 2022 they collaborated to produce a very informative peer reviewed paper “Fifty years of Landsat Science and impacts”, which highlights the importance of open data access and high quality dedicated calibration that keeps Landsat data the ‘gold standard’ in Earth observations.
Other highlights of the meeting included the announcement that the previous “EROS Scholarship in the Department of Geography”, established in 2011 by Dr. Tom Loveland, was renamed the “Tom Loveland EROS Geography Scholarship” to honor Dr. Loveland’s legacy.
