February 28, 2023

On the afternoon of February 27, 2023, the USGS/NASA Flight Operations Team (FOT) noticed dropped electrical currents in the Landsat 9 Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS). Landsat 9 Collection 2 Level-1 product processing was immediately paused to allow the FOT to investigate and determine the cause. The Landsat 9 Operational Land Imager (OLI) sensor was not affected by this anomaly.

The processing and distribution of newly acquired Landsat 9 Collection 2 products was halted on February 27, 2023, and remains stopped while the anomaly is being investigated.

Landsat 9 products generated prior to the anomaly remain available to download from EarthExplorer and the Commercial Cloud.

On February 28, 2023, the FOT initiated recovery operations and resumed imaging.  Data acquired since this anomaly are being collected and are currently being assessed by the USGS/NASA Calibration/Validation Team. After the team completes their assessment and performs any calibration updates, data from the start of the anomaly on February 27 to the present will be made available for download. Some Landsat 9 scenes will become available as OLI-only, with no TIRS data included.

Additional information will be posted when the Landsat 9 data acquired during and after this anomaly become available again.

Note: The previously-planned reprocessing of the entire Landsat 9 archive explained on will begin as planned on March 1.
