The USGS Research Vessel Muskie was temporarily moored in Buffalo, N.Y., August 8 and 9, 2013.
USGS large vessels like the R/V Muskie are "floating laboratories" that carry scientific instruments, such as this Niskin bottle, which collects lake water samples.
The vessels enable researchers from the USGS Great Lakes Science Center to explore the health and population of biological organisms in the Great Lakes. Such research is used by federal, state, and tribal resource managers to protect the area's $7 billion annual commercial and sport fisheries.
