The physical scientist position is a full-time TERM appointment at the GS-7 to GS-9 Federal grade level. The TERM appointment may be renewed every year for up to four years with the potential for conversion to a permanent position. The successful candidate will be part of a team providing support to water-resource studies in the science center on spatial data analysis and management, and data automation using scripting/programming languages. This junior-level position has numerous opportunities for mentoring from senior SAU staff.

The NVWSC has a diverse and innovative water science program supporting Nevada water-resource managers and stakeholders on issues of water availability and sustainability, conjunctive water-resource management, and environmental impacts of human activities. Field data collection is a USGS strength and we continue to be on the forefront of collecting accurate surface water, groundwater, and water-quality data across the State, and across an amazing variety of landforms - from the Colorado River and Mojave Desert in the south, to the big sage valleys and alpine mountains in the north.

The Carson City area offers four beautiful seasons. Uniquely located in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, winters are usually mild because the mountains intercept many westward-moving storms. On the flip side, the Sierra Nevada Mountains often have frequent record-setting snow packs, and for winter sports, we have more than a dozen ski-resorts less than an hour, or a few hours, drive away. And the summers - although Carson City is technically on the edge of the desert, our summers are mild with peak temperatures mostly in the mid-90's (and with low humidity!). Within a few minutes drive of Carson City you can find instant summer relief in the tall cool mountains or on the endless trail networks, including the famed Tahoe Rim and Pacific Crest Trails, or spend your leisure time swimming, boating or fishing at Lake Tahoe. If you want solitude, there are endless opportunities waiting for you in the Great Basin where you can explore wide-open public lands (Nevada is 85% public land!).

If you’re concerned about small-town Carson City being a bit too quiet, Reno (the biggest little city in the world) is only 30 minutes away and has an abundance of shopping, entertainment, and our National pastime, Triple-A baseball (go Reno Aces!). If Reno is still a bit too small, we’re just a few hours from Sacramento, and a few more hours from the Bay Area and San Francisco.
