Sampling HABs on Sabattus Pond in Maine

September 6, 2019

USGS Microbial Ecologist Charlie Culbertson and Maine DEP Ecologist Jeremy Deeds met with members of the media on Thursday September 5th at Sabattus Pond while sampling for Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs).

The sampling is part of a joint effort to identify the causes and extent of HABs across Maine.

The exact causes of HABs are not completely understood, but blooms could be exacerbated by higher water temperatures and increased nutrient loading from agriculture, septic, and storm runoff.

The cyanobacteria that cause the blooms are capable of producing cyanotoxins that are harmful to people and potentially fatal to pets. Check out the link below for more details!
