NIOZ, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, is the national oceanographic institute and the Netherlands’ centre of expertise for ocean, sea and coast. We advance fundamental understanding of marine systems, the way they change, the role they play in climate and biodiversity, and how they may provide sustainable solutions to society in the future.
NIOZ, as part of the sustainable ocean community, Naturalis and Ministry of I&W are organizing the World Ocean Days 2024. On 5, 6 and 8 June activities will be held to give a spotlight to Dutch ocean research.
EMBRACER, a globally unique centre with leading climate experts, will study the complex feedback mechanisms that accelerate climate change, focusing on bridging the gap between long term feedback mechanisms and modern climate change research.
The NIOZ was evaluated by a committee of international experts and our scientific research was rated as excellent. This six-yearly evaluation is used to monitor and improve the quality, relevance and viability of research in public institutions in NL.
Our science is conducted in four scientific departments;. Three of them are area oriented: estuaries and delta areas, coastal seas and open oceans. Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry conducts science in all three area types.
