A Note from Amy Tan
I first learned about Point Blue Conservation Science through a visit to their Bird Observatory with artist, teacher, and naturalist John Muir Laws. At the time, I was learning the basics of drawing birds, and the birds being examined made for excellent subjects. While there, I learned how data from migratory birds, gathered over many years, gave scientists clues to dynamic changes affecting the ecological balance of habitat and wildlife. Birds provided a window on the future. Birds were among those at peril.
I am very particular about conservation groups I choose to support. I’ve been highly impressed with how Point Blue Conservation Science has garnered the admiration, trust and support of many conservation and governmental agencies. They have created alliances with international partners and, just as importantly, their communities who tend the habitat to where migratory birds return to nest.
I am also excited by Point Blue’s recruitment of nature journalists, who creatively combine art and science to activate nature lovers to become citizen scientists. I have become one of them. Thanks, Point Blue Conservation Science. Your good work gives us hope.
