The North Central CASC’s Rapid Climate Assessment Program (RCAP) had a successful start and will expand to meet the needs of the north central region.

The North Central CASC’s Rapid Climate Assessment Program (RCAP) was piloted in the summer of 2023 and included many graduate students and CASC members. The goal of RCAP is to “rapidly” evaluate the impacts of climate change and to produce multiple “Rapid Climate Assessments” that synthesize foundational knowledge that can guide future research and partner engagement.

Projects from summer 2023 reflect the diversity and complexity of climate change challenges. They addressed topics ranging from resource management in the Northern Great Plains to the drivers of water availability in the North Central United States. Graduate students actively contribute to projects, working with advisors and partners to advance the projects and their own professional development. RCAP emphasizes regional and interdisciplinary approaches, enabling tailored solutions for unique local challenges. This includes highlighting how social science can provide insights into social and ecological dynamics that interact in response to a changing climate.

After an informative 2023 RCAP summer, the North Central CASC plans to expand the program, streamline the process, and continue to carefully select topics and deliverables based on the scientific needs of the North Central CASC and its’ partners.

This work is supported by the North Central CASC Project, “Climate Adaptation in North Central Mountain Ecosystems.”
