Concentration and Distribution of Metals in Groundwater near Ft. Meade, MD

Fort Meade would like to determine if elevated metals observed in groundwater are natural or anthropogenic. Given the complexity of this issue, the first phase focusing on data evaluation. Fort Meade and the USGS MD-DE-DC WSC is proposing to evaluate historical data to provide a statistical summary summary of existing groundwater quality conditions present within and surrounding Fort Meade area.

Using the data provided by FGGM, USGS will summarize metals concentrations in groundwater on the Fort, using summary statistics (mean, median, standard deviation, min, max, etc.) and a qualitative spatial summary. Geochemical factors such as pH and reduction-oxidation potential may also be included in the summary of data, along with depth. As a comparison, USGS will also summarize (mean, median, standard deviation, min, max) data from the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS) on existing conditions in groundwater wells within proximity to FGGM. The data analyzed from NWIS were collected from previous projects, but are applicable herein to provide an estimate of existing conditions regarding metals concentrations. The USGS NWIS summary may also include concentrations of metals measured in the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain during previous National Water Quality Assessment investigations.
