Population trends of the mantled howler monkey groups of La Pacifica, Guanacaste, Costa Rica
A complete survey of La Pacifica in Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica was conducted in July 1984 in order to determine whether the howler (Alouatta palliata) population had declined since 1972 as a result of deforestation. The use of stable isotopes in the study of photosynthesis in freshwater plants
The ratio of 13C/12C for photosynthetic tissues of 22 aquatic species was unrelated to photosynthetic pathway. In three aquatic environments CAM and non-CAM species were shown to have similar δ13C values. Although these CAM species derive up to half of their net carbon gain through dark fixation their δ13C values are similar to associated non-CAM species in part because the carbon source for dark

Natural fire management in national parks
An evolving understanding of ecological processes, together with ambiguities in National Park Service policy, have led to multiple interpretations of the role of management in our large natural area National Parks. National Park Service management policies must be dynamic and responsive to changes in scientific knowledge and societal values. We propose that the principal aim of NPS resource manage
