For more than a decade, USGS scientists have conducted studies to determine the occurrence and long-term fate of a number of the pesticides used in the Bay-Delta and throughout the State.
Agriculture in the Bay-Delta region accounts for a large part of California’s economy. In addition to fertilizers, this important industry currently uses a wide variety of pesticides. For more than a decade, USGS scientists have conducted studies to determine the occurrence and long-term fate of a number of the pesticides used in the Bay-Delta and throughout the State. For example, in the waters and sediments of the Bay-Delta system, USGS studies have detected an increase in pyrethroid insecticides (a common household and commercial insecticide), which are highly toxic to aquatic invertebrates (such as insects, crabs, worms, and clams) and fish, especially cold-water fish such as salmon.
