Sea-level rise is increasing the amount of time tidal-marsh habitats are inundated during high tides, and it has the potential to drown existing marshes in San Francisco Bay.
Several endangered or threatened species that rely on these marshes could be displaced—the salt marsh harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys raviventris), Ridgway’s rail (Rallus obsoletus; formerly named California clapper rail), and the California black rail (Laterallus jamaicensis coturniculus). Sea-level rise may also allow seawater to encroach further up into the freshwater zones of the Bay-Delta, causing salinity intrusion that can change plant communities and threaten freshwater supplies to communities and agriculture.
