Explosion caused by collapse of active lava delta, Kīlauea, Hawai‘i
Detailed Description
Collapse of an active lava delta exposes hot solidified flows and molten lava within and on the delta to seawater, triggering a type of steam explosion called a blast. The explosive blast shatters the solidified lava flows of the delta into fragments and hurls them in all directions as far as several hundred meters (yards)!
