Los Altos High School to be highlighted on U.S. Department of Education Green Strides Tour

This year’s tour, with the theme of Schools for Climate Solutions, will visit
ten North and Central California schools
(Los Altos, CA) – A delegation of leaders from the U.S. Department of Education, along with other federal, state, and local governments and agency officials, will be visiting Los Altos High School as part of the Department’s Green Strides Tour, recognizing schools honored as federal Green Ribbon schools for their innovative practices in the areas of sustainable schools, whole-child health, and environmental education. The Green Strides Tour aims to see how Green Ribbon schools have expanded their efforts.
Los Altos was named a Green Ribbon award recipient in 2021. The award honors schools, districts, and postsecondary institutions for work to reduce environmental impact and costs, improve health and wellness, and offer effective sustainability education.
As climate change continues to worsen, schools are impacted in various ways, including public health emergencies, severe damage to facilities and operations, and events that force school closures and encumber learning, according to Green Strides Tour organizers. They say to address climate change, schools must work to both mitigate the impacts and adapt to the existing changes. While climate change presents a risk to learning, there is an opportunity to connect environmental education to all subject areas, prepare students for college and career pathways in the green economy, and promote youth civic engagement. Finally, by adopting climate solutions, schools serve as an example for others in their communities to take action.
Ten Central and Northern California schools will serve as host sites for this year’s tours, each planning engaging activities such as tours led by students featuring local officials and community members to meals prepared from food grown on campus. Los Altos High School will serve as a host site on Wednesday, September 20, from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
“Los Altos High School has long been a leader in environmental initiatives, focusing on all areas of our school operations from purchasing to energy conservation to recycling to the generation of clean, green energy,” said Tracey Runeare, Los Altos High School principal.
Students from the Los Altos Green Team club, faculty advisors, and parents began the rigorous Green Ribbon Award application in 2019. It was completed in 2020 by a new generation of Green Team student leaders.“
The role of students in these efforts has been significant,” she added. “Our Green Team students are passionate, well-organized, and have worked effectively and collaboratively with parents, teachers, and administrators to advance the priorities of our Go Green Sustainability Committee (GGSC).
Some highlights from the school’s nomination package include:
- In 2017, LAHS built a LEED Gold-certified classroom building to accommodate enrollment growth and replace portable classrooms. The area is xeriscaped and includes bioswales that limit surface runoff to storm drains and return rainwater to the aquifer. The building features an HVAC automatic shutoff whenever windows and doors are opened. Solar panels on the roof provide all of the building’s energy needs. Each year, students in the Advanced Placement (AP) Environmental Science class tour the facility to learn more about its sustainable design features.
- Clean energy is a priority for LAHS. The school receives 100% clean electricity from wind, solar, and hydroelectric sources from Silicon Valley Clean Energy. Solar canopy panels provide approximately 55% of the electric needs of the campus, and rooftop solar panels supply energy to the school’s LEED Gold classroom building. LAHS uses on-site battery storage units to balance the load and cut peak energy demands during the day. In the first year of operation, the battery storage system saved $83,000 in reduced utility bills.
- Reducing environmental impacts from transportation is also a priority. The school installed 29 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and a fast charger. Teachers and staff use the chargers at no cost. The stations are available for public charging after school hours and during school breaks at standard rates. After the successful installation and implementation at LAHS, ten neighboring schools in Los Altos requested information and installed similar systems.
- LAHS reports that 26% of their commuting group ride to school on a bike, scooter, or skateboard daily. The Green Team, administration, and student government created a policy that helps to limit the number of students who drive to school by limiting parking permits. The school provides eight dedicated carpooling parking stalls and several storage options for bicycles and skateboards around campus. Members of the Green Team also met with the city’s Complete Streets Commission to lobby for changes to bike and pedestrian routes to school. This led to the first improvement stage occurring in the summer of 2020. Plans are underway for additional changes prioritizing bike and pedestrian routes over cars and parking. Since 2014, these policy changes and programs have led to a 58% increase in students biking to school and a 20% reduction in students receiving parking permits.
- The LAHS Green Team and GGSC led a collaborative effort with the district administration to implement a ban on the sale of single-use plastic bottles on all Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District campuses. In the fall of 2020, all incoming LAHS freshmen were given metal reusable water bottles to encourage the change. The LAHS Green Team members co-authored a District Climate Action Resolution with Citizens Climate Lobby, adopted by the District Board of Trustees in June 2020.

MVLA students are semifinalists in National Merit Scholarships program

Thirty-one MVLA students advance from nationwide pool of 1.3 million students
(Mountain View, CA) – High school seniors from the Mountain View Los Altos High School District (MVLA) have advanced to semifinalist standing for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's (NMSC) National Merit Scholarship 2024 competition.
Thirty-one MVLA students are part of a group of approximately 16,000 National Merit Scholarship student semifinalists named this month by the NMSC.
Advancing to the semifinalist stage is a significant accomplishment. Approximately 1.4 million juniors from 21,000 high schools across the country entered the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) last fall.
Semifinalists are the highest-scoring program entrants in each state and represent fewer than one percent of the nation’s seniors. They have an opportunity to compete for some 7,100 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring. Starting in April, students will find out if they are among those receiving corporate-sponsored scholarships. Announcements regarding the $2500 National Merit Scholarships and college-sponsored scholarships will be made in May and June, respectively.
National Merit scholars are selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors who appraise a substantial amount of information submitted by the finalists and their high schools, including:
• Academic record
• The difficulty level of subjects studied
• Grades earned
• Scores from the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test
• Contributions and leadership in school and community activities
• An essay written by the finalist
• A recommendation written by a high school official
Congratulations to the MVLA students who achieved semifinalist standing:

Mountain View Los Altos High School District Appoints New Principal for Los Altos High School

(Mountain View, CA) – A new leader will be at the helm of Los Altos High School for the 2023-2024 school year.
Tracey Runeare, who currently serves as the principal at Harbor High School in Santa Cruz, will succeed longtime LAHS principal Wynne Satterwhite retiring next month after a 30+ year career with MVLA.
Runeare's appointment was approved by the Mountain View Los Altos High School District at its regular meeting tonight.
"We are delighted to welcome Tracey Runeare to the MVLA school district and look forward to her energy and enthusiasm as an administrator and student advocate," said Dr. Nellie Meyer, Superintendent for MVLA. "I am confident her high school administrative experience, instructional background and values, and commitment to equity will complement our strong LAHS culture."
"I am thrilled to join the Home of the Eagles," said Runeare. "I was particularly drawn to Los Altos High's values of equity and world-class educational opportunities."
Runeare has a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science and a Master of Arts in Education from San Jose State University. She is pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership focusing on transformative leadership, social justice, and equity from San Francisco State University, expected to be awarded next May. She also holds an administrative credential and single subject credential in Social Science from San Jose State University.
Runeare has served as Principal at Harbor High since 2016. Previously, she served as the school's Assistant Principal.
While at Harbor High, Runeare led the school to an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School authorization, increased student enrollment by 25% over two years, and served as a site lead for a $26.3 million bond measure to fund Harbor facilities.
She has also served as an Assistant Principal at Watsonville High and a social studies teacher for several years.
Runeare has expertise in implementing and expanding Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), restorative practices, leading impact teams, and equity in education.
"Ms. Runeare stood out amongst all of the candidates as someone who brings a strong instructional background as a long-time teacher and a veteran high school principal,” said Meyer. ”Her strong instructional expertise, coupled with her understanding of student support, will serve our community well.”
“It was clear in her interview that she is student-centered and had created and implemented successful programs with thoughtfulness and collaboration," added Meyer. "Her focus on equitable practices aligns with our district goals as we work to support all students."
"I have always been drawn to public education," said Runeare, "I see it as a part of a larger project that includes protecting our democracy and breaking down economic and social barriers embedded in our society and the educational system."
"I look forward to building upon the great work in this area at Los Altos High School," she added.
Ms. Runeare (rhymes with canary) was born in Santa Cruz and grew up in Morgan Hill. She now lives in Ben Lomond with her husband and her two sons (ages 19 and 20), who attend Cabrillo College. Her two stepdaughters (ages 19 and 20) attend college at Cal Lutheran and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Longtime Los Altos High School principal Wynne Satterwhite announces retirement

Veteran educator marked 38 years of service to the LAHS community
(Mountain View, CA) – Veteran educator and longtime administrator Wynne Satterwhite has announced she will be retiring as the principal of Los Altos High School at the end of the school year.
Satterwhite dedicated her entire career to serving students, families, and staff at Los Altos – starting as a substitute teacher and serving as a teacher, counselor, and assistant principal before becoming principal in 2004.
"The past 38 years at LAHS have been a blessing," said Satterwhite. "I have always said that I have the best job in the world, and I truly mean it. Starting as a substitute teacher and being given the many opportunities I have had in the MVLA District, has been a joyful, fulfilling, fun, and amazing adventure."
In a letter to her staff to announce her retirement, Satterwhite recalled that some were there as she started her career, others were students in her classroom, and others she met when they joined the LAHS staff.
"Growing with you and getting to know and value each of you as colleagues and friends has been a joy," she wrote.
"We have been very fortunate to have Wynne's unwavering dedication to the students, families, and staff of Los Altos High School," said Dr. Nellie Meyer, Superintendent for MVLA. "It is impossible to overstate Wynne's impact on the thousands of young people who attended Los Altos High School. Her dedication, commitment, and hard work have helped shape countless lives and left an indelible mark on the school community."
"I am personally grateful for her partnership and collaboration, as well as her friendship," Meyer added.
As the District begins a search for Satterwhite's successor, it will use Leadership Associates, a California-based executive search and leadership development firm.
"They will conduct our new principal recruitment and advise us through the selection process," explained Meyer. "As part of the process, they will meet with stakeholder groups and gather essential input through a survey."
Information about the meetings and survey will be provided to the community upon the District's return from spring break in mid-April.
Reflecting on her career, Satterwhite said the staff and students at LAHS have kept her “engaged, motivated, and loving life.”
"The LAHS staff is a beautiful collection of smart, hardworking, and kind humans,” she added. “With our focus always on students, the work has been important, life-changing, and fun."
