Thickness of unconsolidated sediments for the USGS National Crustal Model
We present a numeric grid containing estimates of the thickness of unconsolidated sediments for the western United States. Values for these grids were combined and integrated from previous studies or derived directly from gravity analyses. The grids are provided with 1-km grid-node spacing in WGS84 latitude-longitude coordinates. Detailed information regarding the derivation of these estimates is
Depth to Mesozoic basement for the USGS National Crustal Model
We present a numeric grid containing estimates of the depth to the pre-Cenozoic basement for the western United States. Values for these grids were combined and integrated from previous studies or derived directly from gravity analyses. The grids are provided with 1-km grid-node spacing in WGS84 latitude-longitude coordinates. Detailed information regarding the derivation of these estimates is pro

Depth to bedrock based on modeling of gravity data of the eastern part of Edwards Air Force Base, California
We describe a gravity survey acquired to determine the thickness of basin-fill deposits (depth to bedrock) and to delineate geologic structures that might influence groundwater flow beneath the eastern part of Edwards Air Force Base, California. Inversion of these gravity data combined with geologic map and well information provides an estimate of the thickness of basin-fill deposits (defined here

Santa Rosa's past and future earthquakes
Santa Rosa is no stranger to earthquakes. This northern California city was damaged several times in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by shaking from earthquakes, culminating in the devastating earthquake of 1906, whose rupture passed 20 miles to the west of the city on the San Andreas Fault. Then in 1969, Santa Rosa was again strongly shaken and buildings were damaged by a pair of nearby, m

Strike-slip fault interactions at Ivanpah Valley, California and Nevada
Ivanpah Valley is flanked by high mountain ranges, and represents one of the most imposing valleys of the eastern Mojave Desert. Its sinuous shape implies a complex origin as does the fact that it is not bordered by prominent range-front normal faults like valleys of the Basin and Range Province. In Addition, its deepest sedimentary basin is restricted to a small part of the valley near Nipton tha

Distributed fault slip in the eastern California shear zone: Adding pieces to the puzzle near Barstow, California
We investigate the dextral Lockhart and Mt. General faults, which are among four active structures in the northwestern portion of the eastern California shear zone (ECSZ). Early mapping depicts the Lockhart and Mt. General faults as discontinuous fault traces that continue northwest of the Lenwood Fault. Recent work indicates that the Lenwood Fault slips at ~0.2-1.0 mm/yr over the past ~8 ka and 0

Crustal structure of the northern Harrat Rahat volcanic field (Saudi Arabia) from gravity and aeromagnetic data
New gravity data reveal a prominent negative anomaly along the main vent axis of the northern Harrat Rahat volcanic field in Saudi Arabia. The low continues north of the volcanic field onto exposures of Proterozoic rocks, indicating that the low is caused not only by the volcanic field (and possibly also underlying Cenozoic sediments), but also the underlying Proterozoic basement. An inversion

Middle Pleistocene infill of Hinkley Valley by Mojave River sediment and associated lake sediment: Depositional architecture and deformation by strike-slip faults
Hinkley Valley in the Mojave Desert, near Barstow about 140 km northeast of Los Angeles and midway between Victorville Valley and the Lake Manix basin, contains a thick sedimentary sequence delivered by the Mojave River. Our study of sediment cores drilled in the valley indicates that Hinkley Valley was probably a closed playa basin with stream inflow from four directions prior to Mojave River inf

Connecting the Soda–Avawatz and Bristol–Granite Mountains faults with gravity andaeromagnetic data, Mojave Desert, California
The Soda–Avawatz and Bristol–Granite Mountains faults are considered by some to form the northeastern margin of the eastern California shear zone yet their connectivity and extents are obscured by surficial deposits and the estimates of total right-lateral offset from geologic data range from 0 to as much as 24 km. We use gravity and recently released detailed aeromagnetic data to map strands of t

Buried shallow fault slip from the South Napa earthquake revealed by near-field geodesy
Earthquake-related fault slip in the upper hundreds of meters of Earth’s surface has remained largely unstudied because of challenges measuring deformation in the near field of a fault rupture. We analyze centimeter-scale accuracy mobile laser scanning (MLS) data of deformed vine rows within ±300 m of the principal surface expression of the M (magnitude) 6.0 2014 South Napa earthquake. Rather than

Preliminary hydrogeologic assessment near the boundary of the Antelope Valley and El Mirage Valley groundwater basins, California
The increasing demands on groundwater for water supply in desert areas in California and the western United States have resulted in the need to better understand groundwater sources, availability, and sustainability. This is true for a 650-square-mile area that encompasses the Antelope Valley, El Mirage Valley, and Upper Mojave River Valley groundwater basins, about 50 miles northeast of Los Angel

Subsurface geometry of the San Andreas fault in southern California: Results from the Salton Seismic Imaging Project (SSIP) and strong ground motion expectations
The San Andreas fault (SAF) is one of the most studied strike‐slip faults in the world; yet its subsurface geometry is still uncertain in most locations. The Salton Seismic Imaging Project (SSIP) was undertaken to image the structure surrounding the SAF and also its subsurface geometry. We present SSIP studies at two locations in the Coachella Valley of the northern Salton trough. On our line 4, a

The Evergreen basin and the role of the Silver Creek fault in the San Andreas fault system, San Francisco Bay region, California
The Evergreen basin is a 40-km-long, 8-km-wide Cenozoic sedimentary basin that lies mostly concealed beneath the northeastern margin of the Santa Clara Valley near the south end of San Francisco Bay (California, USA). The basin is bounded on the northeast by the strike-slip Hayward fault and an approximately parallel subsurface fault that is structurally overlain by a set of west-verging reverse-o
