The NMWSC Sediment Lab supports the NMWSC Sediment Program as well as sediment sampling programs around the nation, working in cooperation with State and Federal agencies, resource managers, planners, stakeholders, and the general public. We provide timely and accurate results using tried and true methods to help our cooperators, customers, and in-house program answer questions pertaining to sediment concentration, loads, grain and fine size class distribution.
We are staffed by career ecological science and sediment enthusiasts who are dedicated to providing accurate data to cooperators, USGS coworkers, and the public.
- Jessica Stiles (she/her) has been with USGS at the NMWSC since 1999, and with the NM Sed Lab for the majority of that, taking on the role of lab manager in 2010, and acts as a local DBA/LDM in addition to overseeing the operation of the NM Sediment Lab.
- Tristan Austring (he/him) has been with the federal government since 2008, starting with fish biology at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Albuquerque, moving to USGS at the NMWSC and surface water/sediment sample collection in 2016, finally moving to the NM Sediment Lab in 2022.
- Michael Whiting (He/Him) has been with the USGS NMWSC since 2023, working in the NM Sediment Lab.
- Sidney Wayne (she/her) is a new employee with USGS at the NMWSC as of 2023 with a background in Chemical Oceanography, gaining experience by working on research cruises performing analyses on water samples which will come in handy as she joins us as the Water Quality Lab Coordinator and Sediment Lab Technician.
