Z39.50 Services

The following information is provided to users with Z39.50 clients and to libraries with Z39.50 based systems who would like to search our database from a preferred interface.

CONFIGURATION INFORMATION

  • Database supported: Alma
  • Server: usgs.alma.exlibrisgroup.com
  • Port: 1921 (or 210, if you are using Refworks)
  • Database: 01USGSL_INST
  • Record Syntax: MARC 21

BIB-1 ATTRIBUTE SETS

The z39.50 standards make use of attributes to "code" a client’s query so that the receiving server can process the query correctly. There are six (6) encoding definitions in the z39.50 standard:

USE or INDEX

  • Specifies which data field(s) the query should be processed, such as author, title, subject
  • [1 = personal name 4 = title 7 = ISBN 8 = ISSN 1003 = Author Keyword 1035 = General Keyword]

RELATION

  • Controls the order of numerical expression, like date ranges
  • [1= less than 2 = less than or equal to 3 = equal 4 = greater or equal to 5 = greater than 6 = not equal]

POSITION

  • Specifies the location of term(s) within the fields for matching query, such as first or anywhere.
  • [1= first in field 3 = any position]

STRUCTURE

  • Specifies the structure of data in the query, a single word, a phrase, or a word list is searched
  • [1 = phrase 4 = year 6 = word list]

TRUNCATION

  • Specifies type of truncation processing for query, whether or not a partial search word can be typed
  • [1 = right truncation 100 = do not truncate]

COMPLETENESS

  • Specifies whether or not the search must contain the entire, exact field
