Sea Lamprey Control the Topic of Recent Wired Magazine Interview.

Research ecologist, Nick Johnson, and research fisheries biologist, Scott Miehls (GLSC, Millersburg, Michigan), were interviewed by Michael Tessler for WIRED Magazine June 8-10, 2022. The focus of the story is research and development of technologies to improve control of Great Lakes sea lampreys. Nick discussed his research on sea lamprey sterilization, blocking sea lamprey migration with portable electrical barriers, and use of attractants and repellents to manipulate sea lamprey behavior. Many of these topics were discussed during a tour of local field sites led by Nick to give the journalist a first-hand experience of relevant research projects. Scott discussed his research on selective fish passage technologies, trapping of migratory adult sea lamprey, and research to better understand the behavior of out-migrating newly metamorphosed parasitic sea lamprey. Communications associate, Andrea Miehls (GLSC, Millersburg, Michigan), coordinated the visit and led a tour of Hammond Bay Biological Station. The article is expected to be published within the next few months.
