      Across the nation, USGS collaborates with school districts and other educational institutions that have work transition programs for students (mostly ages 18–22) with cognitive and other disabilities. It’s known as STEP-UP (Secondary Transition to Employment Program - USGS Partnership).

We now partner with three different organizations to bring skilled, nominated interns to the Cooperative Summer Fellowship Program: the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT), the Ecological Society of America (ESA), and the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI). Cooperative Summer Fellowship Programs
This program provides opportunities for advanced undergraduates with specific skills to work at the USGS for at least a summer.  This internship has a 58-year history with the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) to bring in exceptional students trained in geoscience fieldwork, and now also partners with the Ecological Society of America (ESA) and GIS Certification Institute (GICSI) to bring in students trained in biology/ecology and GIS.  Students are nominated by professors, teachers, or partner institutes in order to be eligible to apply for these internships.  Learn more about the Cooperative Summer Fellowship Programs here.
