Automated segmented flow analysis

Colorimetric analysis is automated at the NWQL using Discrete Automated Analysis and Automated Segmented Flow Analysis.  Both approaches work by automating the colorimetric reaction and detection of the analyte.  This automation allows for high throughput of samples while maintaining low detection limits/high sensitivity.  Automated Segmented Flow Analyzers (SFAs) do this by injection and flow of the sample through a series of tubes where it mixes with the color producing chemicals before detection.  The SFA samples are segmented in the instrument by gas bubbles as they flow through the system to reduce inter-sample mixing and cross contamination.  At the NWQL, SFAs are used to analyzed Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen, Total Kjeldahl Phosphorus, Total Nitrogen, Total Phosphorus, iodide, and custom ammonium/ammonia samples.
