This illustration by USGS water data specialist Ben Siebers shows a breccia pipe uranium deposit deep underground. Miners dig tunnels and shafts to reach the uranium. At the top of the mine, there is a tall structure called a "head frame" used to lower miners and equipment into the mine and to lift the uranium ore back up to the surface.
