Eruptions, and subsequent erosional processes, can deliver vast quantities of sand- and gravel-sized particles to rivers and oceans near volcanoes as the impacted landscape re-equilibrates and stabilizes. Increased sediment transport after an eruption often causes flooding problems in valleys and towns downstream that can persist for decades.
