Examples of some of the instrumentation commonly found in a geology experimental research lab

March 2022 (approx.)

Detailed Description

Examples of some of the instrumentation commonly found in a geology experimental research lab. The instrument on the left—a cold-seal pressure vessel in the Experimental Petrology and Geochemistry Laboratory at the University of Oregon—can simulate pressures equivalent to less than 8 km (5 mi) in the Earth’s crust and temperatures up to 900 °C (1650 °F) (photo taken by Behnaz Hosseini in November 2020).  The instrument on the right is an internally heated pressure vessel at the GFZ Helmholtz Center in Potsdam, Germany and can simulate pressures equivalent to depths of up to 25 km (15 mi) and temperatures up to 1250 °C (2280 °F) (photo taken by Roberta Spallanzani in March 2022).
