USGS landslide scientist Brian Collins installing monitoring equipment on a steep hillside in the San Francisco Bay Area. The instrumentation includes subsurface soil moisture and water pressure sensors, and a rain gage. The USGS is monitoring soil moisture and saturation to understand how, where, and when rainfall leads to the triggering conditions for landslides.
