Kapoho, Hawai‘i residents in lower Puna await evacuation during sei...

Detailed Description

By April 22, 1924, the incessant earthquakes caused many people to leave the district. When Hilo Tribune Herald reporter Jazz Belknap reached the Kapoho train station, he found a great crowd waiting for the autos that were hauling passengers out of the district. A special train was sent to within a half mile of the station where the crew found that the track had become twisted. Many of the remaining residents boarded the train and were taken free of charge to Hilo.
