Detailed Description
Seemingly so far from the summit, Kapoho sits within the east rift zone, which is a major underground supply conduit for magma draining the summit magma reservoir. Two villages have been destroyed by recent eruptions--Kapoho in 1960 and Kalapana (and neighboring Kapa`ahu) in 1986-90. During the time that Kapoho and Kalapana were overrun, Highway 130 was constructed and then covered by lava along the coastline southwest of Kaimu. Nothing is permanent on Kīlauea.
