Detailed Description
A researcher measures the snout-vent length of a red eft (Notophthalmus viridescens). The snout-vent length is a measure of the length of a salamander from its snout to its cloaca (located just behind the hind legs). The snout-vent length is a more accurate measurement for determining age and other characteristics of a salamander than the total length, because salamanders are able to drop and regrow their tails.
