Detailed Description
This Issue's Hydro Quiz
This reservoir is the largest man-made waterbody located entirely within its respective state. Covering a distance of about 75 miles (120 km) and extending to a maximum width of 14 miles (23 km), it marks the maximum southwest extent of glaciation during the latest Quaternary Ice Age. A U.S. Air Force interceptor aircraft crashed into the western portion of the reservoir during a winter training flight, not to be recovered until several decades later after extensive research by a local surveyors' group. A state park along the lakeshore serves not only as a popular regional recreation destination, but also the western terminus of a National Scenic Trail that crosses eight states.
