K1 East Transect – 2013

Permanent Site: K1 East Transect; Depth: 6.2 Meters (20.4 Feet) & 6.6 Meters (21.5 Feet); Distance from river mouth: 4.5 Kilometers (2.8 Miles) east; Pre/Post Dam Removal: 2 years post-dam removal; Lat/Long: 48.13592923,-123.5101581; Site Description: This is a shallow site. Sediment is a gravel/sand mixture. This video includes footage from surveys conducted both on July 30 (0:04 – 0:47 seconds) and August 29(0:48 – 2:59 seconds). During the first survey, the majority of the seaweeds seen were reds (0:14 seconds) with a few brown seaweeds, mainly the perennial seaweed Pterygophora californica (0:20 seconds) and Saccharina. However, on August 29, late summer growth of seaweed was observed. Green and red seaweeds were very abundant (0:53 seconds) as were browns but individual plant size of brown seaweed was small. Seven species of browns were recorded including Alaria marginata (1:26 seconds), acid kelp Desmarestia (0:56, 2:19seconds), bull kelp Nereocystis luetkeana (1:23, 2:42 seconds) and the perennial seaweed Pterygophora californica (2:01-2:07 seconds). Two species of invertebrates were abundant this year: burrowing anemones (Halcampa sp.) and juvenile Dungeness crabs (Metacarcinus magister) but are too small to be seen on video.
