K1 West Transect – 2013

Permanent Site: K1 West Transect; Depth: 5.8 Meters (19 Feet) & 5.6 Meters (18.4 Feet); Distance from river mouth: 4.5 Kilometers (2.8 Miles) east; Pre/Post Dam Removal: 2 years post-dam removal; Lat/Long: 48.13592923,-123.51082988; Site Description: This is a shallow site. Sediment is a gravel/sand mixture. This video includes footage from surveys conducted both on July 30 (0:04-0:31 seconds) and August 29 (0:32-2:12 seconds). During the first survey, the majority of the seaweeds seen were reds (0:06 seconds) with a few brown seaweeds, mainly the perennial seaweed Pterygophora californica (0:29 seconds) and Saccharina. However, on August 29, late summer growth of seaweed was observed. Red seaweeds were very abundant as were browns but individual plant size of browns was small. Seven species of browns were recorded including Alaria marginata (0:58, 1:01 seconds), acid kelp Desmarestia (1:08, 1:44 seconds), bull kelp Nereocystis luetkeana (2:00, 2:02 seconds), Saccharina spp. (0:57, 1:43 seconds) and the perennial seaweed Pterygophora californica (0:37, 0:51seconds). Two species of invertebrates were abundant this year: burrowing anemones (Halcampa sp.) and juvenile Dungeness crabs (Metacarcinus magister) but are too small to be seen on video.
