The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center is an energetic and active research facility focused on coastal processes and the increasing hazards due to climate change; marine-related hazards due to subduction zones and related tsunamis and earthquakes; and physical science studies in support of ecosystem processes, health, and recovery. It also contains the only marine mineral research facility within the U.S. Government.

The Center Director is responsible for leadership, management, and fiscal aspects of the Center and works in concert with USGS programs and external partners to develop and implement the Center’s strategic research directions and goals. Under the supervision of the USGS Southwest Regional Director, the Center enjoys partnerships with other USGS Centers, DOI bureaus and Federal agencies, as well as local and international organizations to further define and support its mission: To provide scientifically rigorous information to managers about risks posed by natural hazards; promote safer, more productive coastal communities; and improve stewardship of natural resources.

Composed of approximately 80 geologists, oceanographers, geophysicists, geochemists, and others, the Center’s research primarily covers a wide swath of the U.S., mostly along the West Coast, Alaska, Hawai’i and the Pacific Trust Territories, as well as in international locations.
