The USGS seeks to provide effective situational awareness about long-term and ongoing hazardous events to improve emergency response, inform the public, and minimize societal disruption. Large, highly mobile landslides generate seismic signals that can be detected by seismic monitoring networks and leave scars and deposits that can be detected from high-resolution remote-sensing imagery.
Following large landslides and widespread landslide outbreaks, an expert analysis of data from these and other sources, and prompt release of this information can provide critical information to government agencies, emergency managers, the media, and the public to inform decision making during and immediately following landslide crises. Analysis results for selected large landslides and regional events are summarized in rapidly released preliminary reports that are publicly available through links on this page.
