Mineral Resources Data

Quality data are the foundation of well-informed decisions. The Mineral Resources Program delivers data about the life cycle of mineral resources, from occurrence to end of life, including supply chains and supply chain risks of mineral commodities.

As the Mineral Resources Program, we deliver many kinds of data about mineral resources and commodities.

We provide information about where and how mineral resources occur, the mechanics and risks of mineral supply chains, and the impacts of mineral development on other natural resources. Our data are used by diverse decision-makers:

  • Land management agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management use our geologic maps and resource assessments to understand the tradeoffs of developing mineral resources on public lands
  • The defense and national security community, policy-makers, and other Federal agencies rely on our information about mineral supply chains to shape policy and develop global trade strategies
  • State governments use our geophysical and geologic data to understand mineral resource potential in their state, and our inventories of abandoned mining and energy infrastructure to prioritize remediation and improve safety

Mineral Resource Assessments and Information

We provide information about locations, quantities and characteristics of known and potential mineral resources, including below the ground and in mine wastes. USMIN is the authoritative source for the locations of the most important current and historical mines, mineral deposits and mineral districts of the U.S.

Geophysical, Geologic and Geochemical Data

We collect, process and disseminate data that are critical for knowledge of geologic processes. Among other projects, the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (EarthMRI) is collecting an unprecedented volume of high-quality geophysical, geochemical, geologic , topographic and hyperspectral data across the Nation.

Mineral Supply Chains

We provide statistics and analyses about the supply, demand, and supply chain risks of mineral commodities. The annual Mineral Commodity Summaries report contains comprehensive information on 90 mineral commodities including production, reserves, resources and trends. We also lead the federal government in developing the list of critical minerals essential to the economy and national defense every three years. More data can be found here.
