United States Assessments of Undiscovered Oil and Gas Resources
USGS Energy Resources Program provides periodic assessments of the oil and natural gas endowment of the United States and the World. This website provides access to new, prioritized, assessment results and supporting data for the United States, as part of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA).
Below are data or web applications associated with this project.
Rock Properties Data for the Pre-Cretaceous Formations in the Southwest Wyoming Province Area Rock Properties Data for the Pre-Cretaceous Formations in the Southwest Wyoming Province Area
In 2024, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) compiled rock properties data from the USGS Core Research Center's (CRC) database for the Southwestern Wyoming Province and adjoining areas to better characterize the potential hydrocarbon sources and reservoirs in the area. Data from 53 wells were collected from data analysis results located in the CRC database. These data are derived...

This data release contains the boundaries of assessment units and input data for the assessment of undiscovered conventional and continuous oil and gas resources in in the Lewis Shale of the Southwestern Wyoming Province, Wyoming and Colorado. The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The...
Compilation of vitrinite reflectance data for the Southwestern Wyoming Province, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah Compilation of vitrinite reflectance data for the Southwestern Wyoming Province, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah
This data release is a compilation of vitrinite reflectance (Ro) data from the Southwestern Wyoming Province in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. The data includes about 1,200 Ro measurements from wells drilled for oil and gas exploration and production, coal test holes, and outcrop sections.
New Source Rock Data for the Lewis Shale from the eastern part of the Southwestern Wyoming Province, Wyoming and Colorado New Source Rock Data for the Lewis Shale from the eastern part of the Southwestern Wyoming Province, Wyoming and Colorado
In 2021 the United States Geological Survey (USGS) sampled the lower part of the Upper Cretaceous Lewis Shale in the eastern part of the Southwestern Wyoming Province to better characterize its petroleum source rock potential for an upcoming resource assessment. Ninety-five samples from 24 wells were collected from well cuttings of the lower part of the Lewis Shale stored at the U.S...

From 2000 to 2011, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted 139 quantitative assessments of continuous (unconventional) oil and gas accumulations within the United States. This report documents those assessments more fully than previously done by providing detailed documentation of both the assessment input and output. This report also compiles the data into spreadsheet tables that can be...
