Overview

In 2024, Bhutan was not a globally significant producer of mineral commodities. In 2024, Bhutan was the seventh-ranked producer of ferrosilicon, accounting for an estimated 2.1% of world production. Production of mineral commodities contributed 2.0% to Bhutan’s gross domestic product. Mineral commodities produced in Bhutan included cement, gypsum, iron ore, sand and gravel, stone, and talc. The legislative framework for the mineral sector in Bhutan is provided by the Mines and Minerals Management Act of 1995, as well as the Mines and Minerals Management Regulations of 2022. The Department of Geology and Mines oversees the mineral sector and provides exploration and mining leases. Most mineral commodities were produced by domestic government companies.
