Statistics and information on the mining industry in Kosovo.

Overview

In 2024, Kosovo was not a globally significant producer of mineral commodities. The mineral and quarrying sector represented 4.6% of Kosovo’s overall gross domestic product. Mineral commodities produced in Kosovo included cement, chromium, clays, ferroalloys, lead, nickel, pumice, sand and gravel, crushed and unspecified stone, raw steel, and zinc. Production of these mineral commodities represented only a minor part of the economy of Kosovo. The legislative framework for the mineral sector in Kosovo is provided by the Law on Mines and Minerals No. 03/L-163, amended in 2013 by the Law on the Mining Strategy No. 04/L-158. The Independent Commission for Mines and Minerals oversees the mineral sector, managing legislation, policy, licensing, and operations; monitoring mining activities; promoting investment; and ensuring industry transparency. Most mineral commodities were produced by private companies, except for bauxite, which was produced by Bauxite Mine Volljak, which was wholly owned by the Government. Kosovo exported approximately \$90 million worth of mineral products primarily to other European countries, while importing about \$964 million in mineral products from Europe.
