Statistics and information on the mining industry in Malawi.

Overview

In 2024, Malawi was not a globally significant producer of mineral commodities. Production of cement, gemstones, gold, iron ore, lime, and crushed stone represented only a minor part of the economy of Malawi. The Department of Mines, under the Ministry of Mining, oversees the mineral sector and issues mining licenses. The legislative framework for the mineral sector in Malawi is provided by law No. 25/2023 of the Mines and Minerals Act. Most of the mining and mineral processing operations in Malawi were privately owned, with artisanal mining constituting a minor segment.
