Virginia Flood Investigations
An important part of the Virginia Department of Transportation's missions is the safe maintenance, design, and constructions of bridges that cross-waterways and wetlands in the State. The data collected by USGS in conjunction with this project is a vital element of the overall task and mission of the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Problem
In connection with its design of bridge openings the cooperator requires information regarding the hydrologic and hydraulic characteristics of specific reaches of streams.
Objective
To collect flood information at various sites in Virginia for use in flood frequency determinations and to document flood data for future bridge sites.
Relevance and Benefits

Approach
Operate crest-stage gages at 44 sites. Make indirect measurements of peak flow as unusual floods occur. Publish peak-flow data in the annual data report and enter into the Peak Flow File of the NWIS System. Prepare special reports as required for unusual flood events.
