Boron, molybdenum, and selenium in aquatic food chains from the lower San Joaquin River and its tributaries, California
Boron (B), molybdenum (Mo), and selenium (Se) were measured in water, sediment, particulate organic detritus, and in various biota—filamentous algae, net plankton, macroinvertebrates, and fishes—to determine if concentrations were elevated from exposure to agricultural subsurface (tile) drainage during the spring and fall 1987, in the San Joaquin River, California. Concentrations of B and Se, but

Recruitment of seedlings and vegetative sprouts in unburned chaparral
Age structure of 12 stands of chaparral, unburned for 56—120 yr, was investigated. All shrubs produced discernible growth rings, and ring counts on stems from stands of known age, plus synchrony in annual growth ring width among species in the same stand, were taken as evidence that growth rings represented annual rings. Species that survive fire by vegetative regeneration from the root crown were

Associations between benthic flora and diel changes in dissolved arsenic, phosphorus, and related physico-chemical parameters
Diel relationships between physical and chemical parameters and biomass were examined along a 57-km reach of Whitewood Creek, South Dakota, between 29 August and 2 September 1988. A time lag of ∼3-6 h for fluctuations in soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations (ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 μM at the downstream sites) relative to dissolved arsenic (ranging from 0.3 to 1.2 μM as arsenate (pentav
