Distribution patterns of individually identifiable West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus) in Florida
Photographs of distinctively scarred manatees (Trichechus manatus) were taken at aggregation sites throughout Florida and assembled into a catalog for identifying individuals. Resightings of known manatees in different years or at different locations enabled us to document site fidelity and long-distance movements. Of the 891 individuals included in the catalog as of August 1986, 470 (53%) were re

Scale, variable density, and conservation planning for mammalian carnivores
Many mammalian carnivores are in local or global decline. To slow this process, continued planning to protect these species is warranted, Still, the data bases that we have at our disposal do not adequately document population requirements for space at scales appropriate for conservation planning. To illustrate this problem, we have collected published data for 214 population censuses of carnivore

Assessment of the sensitivity of Missouri reservoirs to acidification
We used water quality information from 103 Missouri reservoirs to assess their sensitivity to acidification from acidic atmospheric deposition. Total alkalinity less than 20 mg/L or a Calcite Saturation Index (CSI) of 1.0 or greater were the criteria to classify reservoirs as sensitive to acidification. Most of the reservoirs (83 of 103) would be considered circumneutral, hard water systems with h

Seed germination and life history syndromes in the California chaparral
Syndromes are life history responses that are correlated to environmental regimes and are shared by a group of species (Stebbins, 1974). In the California chaparral there are two syndromes contrasted by the timing of seedling recruitment relative to wildfires. One syndrome, here called the fire-recruiter or refractory seed syndrome, includes species (both resprouting and non-resprouting) which sha
