Recruitment failure in American avocets and black-necked stilts nesting at Kesterson Reservoir, California, 1984-1985
We evaluated recruitment by American Avocets (Recurvirostra americana) and Black-necked Stilts (Himantopus mexicanus) in 1984 and 1985 at the selenium-contaminated Kesterson Reservoir and at a nearby reference site, the Volta Wildlife Area, both in western Merced County, California. Nests were monitored to determine their outcomes, including hatching success, and broods were censused three times p

Contaminants in foods of aquatic birds at Kesterson Reservoir, California, 1985
Plants, aquatic insects, and mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were collected from Kesterson Reservoir, Merced County, California, and a nearby reference site (Volta Wildlife Area) to compare concentrations of three contaminants found in 1985 with those reported in 1983 and 1984. Mean selenium concentrations in food-chain organisms from sites at Kesterson in 1985 ranged from 26.0 μg/g (dry wt) in wa

Begging behavior in budgerigars
Five hypotheses about relationships between begging rates, feeding rates and other variables were investigated in captive budgerigar nestlings from 23 days post-hatch to fledge date (Period 4). Within families, nestlings that begged more frequently during Period 4 were fed more often by their parents, but there was no indication that nestling weight on day 23 was related to begging rates in the su
