Acoustic Doppler current profiler velocity data collected in the Calumet Harbor, Illinois in 2015 and 2016
Water velocities were measured in the Calumet Harbor for 5 dates in 2015 and 2016 using Teledyne Rio Grande 600 kHz acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP). The data were georeferenced with differential GPS receivers with submeter accuracy. These velocity data were collected in cooperation with the US Army Corps of Engineers-Chicago District.
ADCP data were collected on the following dates:
May 12, 2015
September 9, 2015
October 5, 2015
March 25, 2016
May 6, 2016
ADCP data was collected on May 12, 2015 at multiple transects spaced in a regular grid throughout Calumet Harbor to determine the spatial distribution of layer-averaged velocities. The data have been depth-averaged over the entire measured portion of the water column and temporally averaged over 30 second intervals to reduce noise. The data were also layer-averaged in 2 foot increments of depth from the bed to the water surface, and spatially averaged over 269 foot intervals to reduce noise and correspond to nodes of an US Army Corps of Engineers existing hydraulic model. Data were processed using the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (Parsons and other, 2013). Any data assigned a value of "9999" are invalid or missing and should not be used for analysis.
ADCP data was collected on September 14, 2015 at multiple transects spaced in a regular grid throughout Calumet Harbor to determine the spatial distribution of layer-averaged velocities. ADCP data were also collected along a prescribed navigation path provided by the US Army Corps of Engineers (ERDC_path.kmz). ADCP data was collected on October 5, 2015, March 25, 2016 and May 6, 2016. These events were surveyed along a prescribed navigation path provided by the US Army Corps of Engineers (ERDC_path.kmz) and were processed with the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (Parsons and others, 2013) to obtain layer-averaged velocities in 2 foot increments of depth from the bed to the water surface, and depth-averaged velocities over the entire measured portion of the water column. All processed velocities are temporally averaged over 30 second intervals to reduce noise.
