A modified marine radar was deployed on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research vessel, Gordon Gunter, during the fall of 2023 and 2024 as it transected the Gulf of America conducting benthic surveys. The radar collected data on avifauna (and flying animals generally) within a couple kilometers of the vessel during a portion of the fall migration. Data collected can be used to derive target abundance, altitude, and flight speed and direction relative to the ship.
