An adult female polar bear on the sea ice wearing a GPS satellite video-camera collar. GPS video-camera collars were applied to solitary adult female polar bears for 8 - 12 days in April, 2014-2016. These collars enabled researchers to understand the movements, behaviors, and foraging success of polar bears on the sea ice.

USGS scientist Karyn Rode and USFWS biologist Michelle St Martin collect body condition data on a polar bear on the Chukchi Sea spring sea ice. USGS and FWS have collaborated on polar bear research in the Chukchi Sea since 2008 providing new insights into the status and health of the population and responses to changing sea ice conditions.

Scientist collection samples on South Cascade Glacier, northwestern Washington State. South Cascade Glacier located in a north-northwest facing valley near the crest of the Cascade Range in northwest Washington state. In 1959 scientists with the USGS began collecting mass balance data on South Cascade Glacier, now one of five "benchmark glaciers" in the US.
