Surface-water-quality assessment of the Yakima River basin in Washington: Analysis of major and minor elements in fine-grained streambed sediment, 1987

Fine-grained streambed sediment from the Yakima River Basin was sampled from 448 locations and analyzed for 45 elements. Anomalous major- and minor-element concentrations were based on baseline values established from element concentrations in streambed sediment in the basin. The largest number of anomalies occurred for antimony, arsenic, cerium, copper, and zinc; at least 10 percent of these ele

The dynamic relationship between ground water and the Columbia River: using deuterium and oxygen-18 as tracers

Deuterium and oxygen-18 were used as natural tracers to investigate the hydraulic relationship between the Columbia River and the Blue Lake gravel aquifer near Portland, Oregon. A time series of stable-isotope data collected from surface and ground waters during a March 1990 aquifer test confirms that the river and aquifer are hydraulically connected. Calculations based on simple mixing show that
